Research has shown that nonverbal and minimally speaking children with autism can respond well to sign language due to its visually based nature which provides a mode of quick communication. Evidence suggests signing may actually assist with verbal communication by reducing tantrums and aggression rooted in frustration and stemming from a desire to express a want or need. Moreover, in providing an additional form of communication, potential for social interaction is greatly improved.
